A total game changer for me was when I changed my approach to food and exercise. I have spent years not only studying the body, mind and nutrition, learning and understanding the science behind it all, but I have also gained over 15 years’ experience in working with clients and experimenting with my own body. I can confidently say that if you love your body, it will love you back and repay you in so many ways.
So what do I mean by loving your body? It’s making decisions, taking action and forming habits that are in the best interests of your body and treating your body with the love and kindness that it deserves, and thus enabling it to perform and be its best, as nature intended. It’s a mindset shift. So, rather than exercising as punishment for eating too much or so you can eat your favourite junk food, decide to move or exercise because your body is designed to move, loves to move and needs to move. Chose movement that feels good, fits in with your lifestyle and makes you happy. If you don’t feel like moving, or are feeling tired, then remember the why; that moving gives you energy, makes you feel better, it releases endorphins, improves your mood, de-stresses you, lowers high blood pressure, improves insulin resistance, is good for your heart and lungs… and so on. Find your why and you will find your way to get back on track.
Loving your body means making sure you keep it strong and do things that keep your muscles strong. Why? Because your body is meant to be strong and those strong muscles will support your joints and bones and keep them healthy. Muscles also help keep your metabolic rate up, which is important for your health. Muscles are also where you store carbohydrates for energy, before those carbohydrates are converted into fat and stored for later use.
Loving your body means stretching it and keeping it flexible because it makes you feel better and because your body is meant to be supple and have a good range of movement. Being inflexible is a sign of imbalance in your body and puts you at risk of injury, which is not loving to your body.
Loving your body means sitting and standing with good posture, because you love your spine and you don’t want to cause your body aches and pains, or worse still, deform your spine.
Loving your body means, eating to nourish your body to help it flourish and thrive, and you will have better health, balanced hormones, more energy, glowing skin, shiny hair and strong nails. Rather than eating cake, croissants, chips or crisps, which are empty calories and have no nutritional benefit and are detrimental to your health.
Loving your body means, choosing kind and positive thoughts about yourself because you know that your subconscious mind is always listening, and negative self-talk is bad for your wellbeing and destructive. Love and value yourself because you are worth it!
When you change your approach and mindset to one of loving your body, it will love you back and repay you in so many ways.
